A Journey from teacher to president : Pranab Mukherji

 

After starting as a teacher, he became a well-known name in politics. Pranab Mukherjee was elected as the President of India five years ago after traveling decades in the politics of the Center. On 25 July 2012, he was sworn in as the 13th President of the country.

     



At different times in his 60 years of political life, he has served in many important ministries and posts of the Government of India. When he was in the central government, he was seen as a troubleshooter of the government.

President Pranab Mukherjee will be remembered for his scholarly and gracious personality. Even before, he had done many important responsibilities. He took many decisions out of the box during his tenure.

Pranab da's tenure as President can be considered non-controversial and without any confrontation with the government. Typically mercy petitions sent to the President are pending for a long time. But Pranab Mukherjee will be remembered for taking immediate decision on the hanging of many terrorists. Pranab Mukherjee did not take any time to approve the hanging sentence of Mumbai attack convict Ajmal Kasab and Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. He also stamped the death sentence of Yakub Memon. He granted clemency to four people during his tenure. He upheld the death sentence of 28 people found guilty of murder and rape.

The person who is in the presidential post is expected to work from party politics even after having relations with political parties. There have been few occasions when a non-political person has got the post of President. During his 5-year tenure as President, Pranab Mukherjee worked away from political affiliations.

   

During the recent release of a book, Prime Minister NarendraModi released the book 'President Pranab Mukherjee: A Statesman at the Rashtrapati Bhavan'. On this occasion, the Prime Minister mentioned his emotional association with Pranab Mukherjee and said that Pranab da took care of him as if a father kept his son. The outgoing president also acknowledged that there was never any dispute between the two. However, the ideologies of the two are different.

Pranab Mukherjee is not just a name president. He used his powers well and proved that he is the head of the republic. He was constantly watching the changing conditions of the country and he kept mentioning it in his statements. Pranab Mukherjee warned the government several times during his tenure and said that the atmosphere in the country is getting worse and the government should pay attention to it.

    

     

    

He has written many books on Indian economy and nation building. He has been awarded with awards like Padam Vibhushan and Outstanding Parliamentarian. His tenure will be remembered as an example of diplomacy of a brilliant politician.
